So what about Earth Day 2010 ?

20 April 2010

Its Earth Day on the 22nd of April. So what now?

"What can i contribute anyway, im just one man?"

"So what if i do these? Others will still continue doing it"

"I conserve, while others consume as much as they can, why limit myself?"

Most of environment-saving campaigns are hampered by these mentalities. Our inherent survival instincts for SELF and FAMILY undermine survival inclinations for community, country and the world. Anything good for the environment would, in most cases, conflict with personal comforts. Therein lies the rub.

This Earth Day 2010, let us be reminded that we have to give in order for us to gain. We need not do "big" things to contribute to this campaign. Sometimes, the small, simple things done in numbers can do greater good.

Here are some simple, everyday things YOU CAN DO to help save the environment:

1. If you are buying small stuff in convenience stores, tell the clerk not to bother bagging your purchase. If you can carry it with just your hands and your pockets, do so. Most clerks in 7eleven or Ministop stores bag even small items like candy bars, even bottled juice and beverages. Common, you'll be consuming these as soon as you walk out of the store anyway, so why bother bagging it?

2. Buy stuff from thrift shops, 'ukay-ukays' and second-hand stores. Its the best way to recycle.

3. Use the stairs! Walk!

4. Are you aware that there are biodegradable plastics? Use them, or shop in stores/groceries that utilize these plastics.

5. As much as possible, travel by light rail (MRT, LRT).

6. Replace your incandescent bulbs with CFL. Its brighter and consumes less electricity. The price might be higher but you'll be saving money in the long run. If you want to replace your incandescent bulbs for FREE, you can exchange these for CFL in the nearest SM Malls. Just bring the incandescent bulbs and a Meralco bill within the last six months. Let's support this campaign of the Department of Energy.

7. When electricity is concerned, do things by the bulk. While you always have to wash all your clothes, you dont have to iron it all! Heres a tip, get rid of the creases before you hang them in the clothesline (konting pagpag lang kelangan nyan).

8. Use your pockets or bags for small trash while mobile. The world is not your personal trashcan (mahiya naman kayo!

9. Avoid ordering fast food 'to go'. Or as most Filipinos say, 'for take out'.

10. When you own a vehicle, avoid rush hour traffic if you can. If not, a longer, less congested route is better than a shorter, more congested one.

11. When dining out, don't use straws for your drinks.

12. Share this to everyone you know.
LETS SUPPORT EARTH DAY 2010. LETS DO OUR SHARE. DONT KEEP THIS TO YOUR SELF. INFLUENCE OTHERS TO GO GREEN.

WE ALL LIVE IN AN ISLAND WE CANT ESCAPE FROM. EARTH, ITS THE ONLY HOME WE'VE GOT.

John A.: yes, nothing is too small.. better than doing nothing and remain apathetic forever.. as if nothing is going wrong..

    Support 'home' earth day!

    God bless!
